The National Federation of Filipino American Association of North Carolina (NaFFAA-NC)serves as the voice of Filipinos and Filipino Americans in North Carolina and the United States. The federation consists of all Filipino American associations in North Carolina: Anak Pawis (USA), Church of the Living God Prayer Group, Dagyaw, Fil-Am of Charlotte, Fil-Am of Fayetteville, Fil-Am of Greensboro, Fil-Am of Greenville, Fil-Am of Havlock, Fil-Am of Jacksonville, Fil-Am Association of the Lower Cape Fear, Filipino American Community of Western North Carolina, Gabriela Silang Society, Philippine American Association of North Carolina (PAANC), Samahang Pilipino in Fayetteville, and Young Pilipino Professionals of North Carolina (YUPPs). These organizations are bonded together with a common goal to champion and promote the well-being and welfare of Filipinos and Filipino Americans, while maintaining Philippine ties, culture, and heritage. Originally called the Bayanihan Club, its purposes were and still continue today to be (1) the preservation of Filipino cultural values; (2) the provision of social opportunities for all individuals interested in the Philippines; (3) the provision of assistance to needy members of the local community; and (4) the provision of assistance for citizens of the Philippines. In pursuit of these goals, the organization, among other things, sponsors the Maharlika Cultural Troupe, which performs both traditional and contemporary Philippine dances and music. To encourage and promote the participation from the youth members within the Club, the new Phil-Am Teen Club was formed and organized this year. The primary goal of the Phil-Am Teen Club is to provide leadership training for the youth and instill discipline while appreciating their cultural heritage. There are thousands of Filipinos living in the Fayetteville area, with the great majority are active members or retired military personnel. Members of this community represent almost all 73 provinces of the Philippines as well as all the major linguistic and ethnic Philippine subcultures. Membership in the Club is open to any interested individual. The greatest challenge is, as the outgoing Chairman Sonny Guerrero puts it, for "the new board to encourage every member to be part of the solution, not a part of the problem and contribute in bringing peace, cohesion, and harmony to all Filipino-Americans in the community towards a common cause". ****************************** Filipino American Association of Havelock ****************************** For the past 17 years, the Filipino American Association of Havelock-Cherry Point has been a leader in attaining ethnic education, college scholarship, and a wide variety of investments into the community. The purposes of the organization are (1) to bring closer ties between the Filipino and American people of havelock-Cherry Point and sorrounding areas who share a common bond of frienship, fellowship, or cultural heritage; thus promoting a better relationship, understanding, and respect for shared values with one another; (2) to promote family involvement in the Filipino-American community through shared social functions; (3) to provide family assistance within the Filipino-American association capabilities; and (4) to promote a healthy environment for our children with special emphasis on education and Filipino-American cultures. The Filipino community here has a large population of active and retired military personnel. ****************************** Filipino-American Community of Western North Carolina ****************************** In its 5th year, the organization has grown from it a small group of committed and dedicated founding fathers to a full-pledged organization of dynamic and equally dedicated members. Formed in 1994, the organization has ideals and puposes which include bringing together Filipino-American families and individuals who share a common desire of preserving the Philippine heritage and culture as they assimilate themselves into the mainstream of American society. Mr. Danny Mindo, the outgoing president, has succeeded in bringing together members in Asheville and sorrounding areas to come to know more about each other and in building a bridge of understanding between the Filipino culture and the American way of life. ****************************** Philippine-American Association of North Carolina, Inc. ****************************** Celebrating its 16 years of service, since its founding in 1984, the Philippine-American Association of North Carolina, Inc. is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization. Its mission is to provide cultural, social, educational, and humanitarian services to communities in North Carolina and in the Philippines. Its foremost humanitarian project is the Carolina Medical Mission, which provides free medical, surgical, opthalmologic, and dental services to the "poorest of the poor" in rural Philippines. Your donation and volunteerism make this mission a continued success. ****************************** Gabriela Silang Society ****************************** To establish a bond of fellowship and unity, a group of Filipino women got together and created an organization on January 1st 1997. Giving tribute to the first revolutionary heroine, the group aptly named the organization the Gabriela Silang Society GSS). With the family at the center, the GSS aims to provide a circle of varying activities, from developing talents ... to utilizing skills ... to encouraging equality and friendship ... to helping each other while nurturing each member's spiritual convictions. Goals: (1) To help preserve Philippine culture and heritage. (2) To help enhance the development of talents and skills of the Filipino-American youth. (3) To promote and encourage participation in community involvement. (4) To act as a core group for fund raising to support Philippine-American group projects. (5) To help nurture the spiritual dimension of each group member. ****************************** Dagyaw Dance Company of North Carolina ****************************** "Dagyaw " or "Bayanihan" is the Philippine spirit of teamwork. Our goal is to promote the culture, customs, and traditions of the Filipino people through folk music and dance. It is an independent organization, which has perfomed in universities, private companies, and other organizations. Anyone and everyone is invited to join ages 4 and up. Since we are a pioneering group, we need all your support: as dancers, someone to provide a place to practice, someone making costumes... Our requirements are basic- all we ask for is a willingness to work together, dedication, and commitment. In return, we hope to provide a better understanding of the Filipino culture, new found friendship, and fun... As a historical perspective, the values, desires and occupations of the Filipino people are reflected in their folk dances. The dances have evolved naturally and spontaneously in conjunction with the patterns of daily living. They have been handed down through generations until they become partof a cultural heritage. Most of the Filipino dances reflect the Spanish origin in style and rhythm. These various dances have become a part of the Filipino culture. Come on and join us! Let's dance and sing together. ****************************** Anak Pawis (USA)****************************** Anak Pawis (USA) is a non-profit socio-cultural organization founded and headquartered in the State of North Carolina. Founded by Filipino-Americans in 1993, the organization is not a political nor a labor-organized association, nor affiliated with any organizations outside the United States. The founders chose the name Anak Pawis, which means "hard working", because it is descriptive of Filipino immigrants who work hard to earn a living. Since Anak Pawis is a common term in Pilipino, any similarity of this association's name with any other organization is purely coincidental. Furthermore, what makes Anak Pawis (USA) unique is that it is an organization of, by, and for Filipino-Americans in North Carolina. OBJECTIVES (1) To encourage and preserve the Filipino value of diligent, honest hard work in his fullest capacity in order to afford a decent and comfortable life for his loved ones. (2) To preserve the Filipino value of "Bayanihan" or the spirit of unselfishly lending a helping hand in all occasions and circumstances, including providing material and moral support to immigrants, overseas workers, newcomers, and visitors. (3) To enhance friendship and camaraderie among all Filipino-Americans in North Carolina, including immigrants, overseas workers, newcomers, and visitors. (4) To form a forum of communication and exchange of ideas among its members and their families and with other organizations. (5) To serve as a source of information and resources to the general public in the promotion of Philippine culture, interests, and concerns. (6) To get involved in humanitarian and community service projects in the Philippines and United States of America. (7) To form forum for the communication of social, health, economic and other issues for the advancement of Filipino women. (8) To encourage and support children education and awareness of Filipino culture and heritage. It hosted the largest Philippine Centennial Celebration in North Carolina on June 13, 1998, with a prelude of a successful and full of fanfare pre-centennial celebration in June 1997. ****************************** The Filipino American Association of the Lower Cape Fear ****************************** The organization has no set of officers, but various activities are held together by few families and friends. It has goals to preserve Philippine culture and heritage, to provide humanitarian services, and to serve as a bridge of understanding between Americans and Filipinos in Wilmington and sorrounding areas. It had sponsored the Centennial Celebration of the Philippine Independence from Spain in August 1998, with the participation of artists and talents from the Philippines. The organizations maintains ties with various Filipino organizations in North Carolina. ****************************** Fil-Am of Charlotte ****************************** The organization is now managed by former presidents and board of directors. It has missions to provide cultural, social, educational, and humanitarian services to communities in North Carolina and in the Philippines, as well as to serve as a vehicle to promote greater understanding for Filipinos in Charlotte and sorrounding areas. ****************************** The Spirit of the Living God Church ****************************** It is a charismatic religious group with a primary goal to enrich spritual being of members and friends. Its members, both young and old, are from the Research Triangle area. It just recently formed within the group the Musical Ministry Youth Club, whose singing members are made up of mostly young people. ****************************** Fil-Am of Jacksonville/Camp Lejune ****************************** The organization, founded in 1975, is a non-profit organization serving mainly the Filipino community of Jacksonville, Camp Lejune, and sorrounding areas. It has objectives in bringing together the friendship and camaraderie of the members and friends of the Fil-Am. Most members are connected with the city of Jacksonville, Camp Lejune, and other military bases in the area; some members live in sorrounding areas. Every member is important and will be heard, because they are very special. The vision: The preservation of our cultural heritage and future of the Fil-Am, having a Filipino-American Center, with a display of Filipino artifacts, and someplace that we can call our own. This is the biggest goal to achieve, and it will take unity and dedication of all the members of the Filipino-American Association to achieve this vision. As the current President, Chris Gunn, puts it, "the President alone, can not do this, however, we, the people can. As Filipino-Americans, we must put our differences aside and work together.
